City accepts only bid for property & liability insurance
By Pauli Clariday
As the city came to open bids submitted for the city’s property and liability insurance, the pickings were slim. A single bid was submitted by Baldwin Insurance to continue coverage with Trident Insurance with a nearly $6,000 increase for the upcoming policy term.

What cost the city $22,293 last year will cost them $28,133 this coming year, causing the city to dip into reserves to pay the difference between the $28,133 and what was budgeted.

Steve Baldwin, Baldwin Insurance of Kearney, was present to explain the process and proposals he received from his providers.

New Directions for the Clinton County Youth Building
Approximately one year ago on September 4, 2009, the ownership of the Clinton County Youth Building transferred from Clinton County to the Clinton County Extension Council. The decision to accept the title was not taken lightly by the council knowing the financial obligations it would incur. After a lengthy discussion and financial review of the first year of building operations, the council voted at the August 23, 2010, meeting to seek support from the organizations for which the building was intended. This measure will help insure that the facility will continue to be available for 4-H, FFA and Extension programming. The motion calls for 4-H county individual member dues to be increased.

**Breaking news** Recount requested by Waltemath
In the primary election on August 3, Judy Wright, candidate for the Democratic nomination for fifth district state representative, triumphed over opponent Mike Waltemath by only thirteen votes. Wright received 1,431 votes, to Waltemath’s 1,418. Missouri state law allows a losing candidate to request a recount, which if approved would be done at state expense, if the vote differential is one percent or less.

Waltemath has requested a recount, stating that he is not comfortable with the close difference. He compared asking for a recount to seeking a second opinion in the case of a medical diagnosis.

Good MOOOs - Shatto root beer milk placed first in the world!
By Candy Spilman
Some kids don’t like milk. But what if it was root beer milk? And what if it was officially the best root beer milk in the world?

Local parents may now use that argument to get finicky children to drink their milk. The root beer milk made at Shatto Dairy, located on 33 Hwy. between Lathrop and Plattsburg, has recently been named first in the world in the Open Class category of the World Dairy Exposition. Shatto strawberry milk took second place in the same category, and Shatto 2% milk has the distinction of being second in the world in the White Milk category.

Middle school students busted with drugs
On August 25th and August 26th, Lathrop police officers were called to the Lathrop Middle School in regard to drugs being brought into the school. On the 25th, a 13 year old male subject was found in possession of drugs, and on the 26th, a 12 year old female subject was found to be in possession of drugs.

Gene will officially retire on September 2, 2010 after 25 years of being Gower’s Shelter Insurance man. Gene will remain at his office at 302 Railroad Ave. in downtown Gower until a new replacement is trained, sometime in mid-October.
Gene won’t be retiring from his bus schedules and is planning on taking on a full-time route, plus continuing to drive the buses for the EBHS sports actvities.

Shelter dog finds good home at Convalescent Center
The Center formed a committee of employees to search for an animal that would be compatible with the residents, knowing that the companionship of a pet is missed by many who resides at the Center.
“It took three months to find the perfect dog,” Cathy Clark said. Kipper was found at the St. Joseph Animal Center, a friendly dog who had been at the shelter longer than most, but was kept because of his great personality.
Kipper has his own charts, just like the residents and a policy was created for his scheduled care, with all the employees taking responsibilities. Kipper has 24/7 access to the rooms except at meal times, only then is he crated.

Patriot Express Run makes its way through Lathrop
If you noticed a lot of motorcycles running through Lathrop Sunday morning, it was because of the 1st Annual Patriot Express Run.

The run started and finished at the Kearney VFW. Funds raised went to the Fisher House. The Fisher House provides a “home away from home” for military families to be close to a loved one during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury. The run is a result of the Dave Barr Foundation.

In 1969, at age 17, Dave began his military career with the U.S. Marine Corps, receiving 57 air medals while serving on a helicopter gunship in Vietnam. He left the Marines in 1972, but felt the need to seek adventure and another cause.
